The new
Hopewell Designs, Inc. provided the irradiators for the new Health Physics Instrument Laboratory
at the Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory.
This laboratory has over 15,500 square feet and provides alpha, beta, gamma, neutron,
and X-Ray calibration.
It also has space and equipment for environmental testing as well as repair and maintenance
of instruments.
This new lab will calibrate over 3,000 radiation survey instruments annually.
One of the primary goals of the new facility was to reduce the cost of calibration while maintaining the quality of services and products. Hopewell Designs, Inc. assisted through their innovative approach to controlling and operating the systems through the use of automation software. Before construction even began, our engineers and laboratory staff were working to design optimum calibration systems for this application. The result of this close collaboration was a design that fully automates operations of the irradiator, yet leaves complete control with the operator. |

is a new tool available for instrument calibration and dosimetry programs.
These irradiator systems, combined with the building’s new features and the calibration program,
has made this laboratory one of the best radiation instrument calibration laboratories
in the United States. We are proud to have been a part of this project and to have worked with the staff at INL. |
